Pet Sounds

Before Pet Sounds The Beach Boys were known for fun in the sun, their musical imagery conjured visions of surfers riding the waves of southern California. They were incredibly successful with this formula for many years, with many chart-topping hits. Pet sounds written primarily by Brian Wilson who had been worn down by the riggers of touring and the demands of being in the worldwide phenomenon known as the Beach Boys. Instead of touring Brian spent time unwinding and being creative in the studio, Pet sounds was basically composed completely by Brian, the band was only brought it to work out some of the vocal parts. This album has much more lyrical depth than previous Beach Boy albums, it has a more melancholy sound as well. Before the conception of this album the band had broke ways with their long time manager and father Murry Wilson.

The Instrumentation of this album is much more composed with strings, brass and other instruments creating a bigger and more orchestral vibe. The album was not as big a seller as the bands previous album mainly because the label Capitol Records didn’t understand and appreciate its uniqueness and potential. It did slowly gain traction and to this day is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Rolling Stone magazine has it as number 2 on a 500 greatest albums of all time list.

As I listen to this album I quickly recognize many songs from it and realize that I have heard these songs all over in many different places throughout my entire life. To me that is a single indicator signifying this albums influence on pop culture for many years following its release. The arrangement of the album is well done each track flows perfectly to the next. Though being in Mono due to Brian being partially def it still sounds great, though I must admit when I re-listened to this album it was the Stereo re-mastered version. This album will be considered a classic for many years to come and it as forever etched itself into music history.
